CAN-USA-MEX 2004 (EUS)

@hispano                      @english

Udaberri+uda sasoia Pirinioetan igaro ondoren 2004ko irailan berriz ere emigratzeko ordua iritsi zen eta Canada ekialdera joan nintzen bakarrik. Ez nuen itzulerako hegaldirik eta nire barne iparrorratza  jarraikiz 2 urte t’erdira itzuliko nintzen Asia-tik Euskal Herrira, munduari itzulia emanez.

CANADA-USA-MEXICO   2004-9/12

Argazkian ikusten den autobusa, 2 ibilgailu eta 2 remolke edo atoiekin (batean kayakak eta bestean janari+sukaldea) Ipar Amerika gurutzatu genuen ibaitik ibaira joanez. Canada ekialdean dagoen Quebec eta Ontario probintzi arteko Ottawa ibaian hasi, USA ekialdetik gurutzatu eta mexikar pazifikoan bukatu genuen, ozeano Barean.

Jim Coffei jaunak bere Sprit rafting enpresaren bidez antolatutako WILD programan parte hartu nuen, “ur bizietako liderren garapen intentsiboa”.

15 ikasle eta 15 langile. 3 hilabetez ikasten eta gozatzen egon ondoren ibai gida lan munduan murgiltzeko prest utziko dituen bidai programa.

Ni langilea nintzen, instruktore eta segurtasun lanetan aritzeaz gain nire lan berezitua argazkilaria izatea zelarik.

Bernardo doktore mexikarra bideoaz eta ni argazki kameraz, ibai guztiak kayaketan jaitsi genituen bidaiaren erreportari moduan lankide eta adiskide.

Canadako Ottawa ibaian hastapeneko iraulketa ikasten.

Eskola teorikoak eta praktikoak xarma bereziko ikasgela aldakorretan izan genituen.

Adibidez San Luis Potosi mexikar estatuko Micos bailarako zuhaitz honen azpian.

Edo Veracruz mexikar estatuko Jalcomulco herriko Pescados zubian autobuseko sabailan.

USA   Ameriketako Estatu Batuak

Pensylvania-ko Youghiogheny ibaian lehen geldieunea egin ondoren West Virginiara joan ginen.

Hemen Gauley ibaia dago, indartsua, dibertigarria eta ospetsua. Urtegitik hasiaz 50km 3 sekziotan. 5 ur bizi handi ditu ikuskizuna ziurtatuaz.

Urtegi honek urtean 6 astez bakarrik askatzen du ura (iraila-urria), astean 4 egunez, pertsona eta untzi pilaketa lortuaz. Horietako asteburu batean “Gauley Fest” ibai makro festibal girotua antolatzen da, 2005ean honetara itzuliko nintzelarik.

USAko ibai hauetan Andrew Holcombe kayakari proa eduki genuen gida eta instruktore Gauley ibaiko `PillowRock´ ur biziko argazki honetan ikusten den bezala.

Gogoratzen dut nola PillowRock gainetik nire taldekoei argazkiak atera eta beraien erreskatetan behera joan zirenean nola linea zailena aukeratu nuen. Korronte guztia ezkerreko harkaitzaren aurka zijoan ur pareta edo kuxin handia sortuaz, eta honen ezkerrean 2 metrotako kontrakorronte basatia horma bertikalek mugatua.

Lortu nuen sartzea, bai, baina adrenalina askatzeak hor egin zuen gora, zezenaren gainean rodeoa eginez bainitzan kontrakorronte txiki basatia gora, behera eta alde guztietara mugitzen zen. Ni emozio eta adrenalinaz beteta nengoen bertako publiko ezezaguna txistuka, oihuka eta besoak gora jauzika hasi zenean. Handik ondo ateratzea lortu nuen eta gerora jakin nuen txoko basati horrek izena ere bazuela: Room of Doom.

New River ere jaitsi genuen, Ameriketako ibai zaharrenetarikoa.
Zubi hau munduko altuena zen 2004 arte, eta luzeenetarikoa.

Tennessee estatuan Ocoee ibaia jaitsi genuen.
Bertan dago kayakarekin jolasteko Devil´s Hole zulo ezaguna.

ERRESKATEAK

Ibai gidak erreskate egoerak bideratzen jakin behar ditu eta hori ikasteko baliabide paregabeak genituen. ‘Rescue 3’ erakundearen SRT 1 eta 2 (Swiftwater Rescue Technician level 1&2) ikastaroak jaso genituen Jim Coffei instruktore bikainaren eskutik.

Alboan ikusten da Micos urjauzietan biktima batzuk erreskatatzeko eszenatokian egin ziren maniobretako bat (SRT1).

Beheko argazkietan aldiz, Xico ibaian erreskate eszenatokian rapel luze bat eginaz eta biktimak lan gogorrez erreskatatzen.  Gaueko erreskate eszenatokia Pescados ibaian egin genuen (SRT2).

Pescados ibaian erreskate maniobra ugari praktikatu genituen: igerian lotuta ibai erdiko harritik biktima atera, oinak urazpian harrapatuta dituen biktima erreskatatzeko teknikak, harkaitzaren aurka dagoen baltsa ateratzeko teknikak (horien artean abantaila mekanikoa), ibaia oinez gurutzatzeko pala+talde formazio teknikak, etabar luze bat.

Jim Coffei instruktore lanetan ikasleak ibaia gurutzatzeko prestatzen diren bitartean.  Pescados ibaia, Veracruz-Mexico.

MEXIKO

Gure lehen geldiunea San Luis Potosi estatuko Huasteca Potosina eskualdean izan zen, Ciudad Valles inguruan. Bertan "Cascadas de Micos" Salto ibai zatia dago, ur mineraletatik sortutako kareharri txuriak ertz erregularreko hormak eraikitzen ditu eta guri kayakean jaisteko parke ikusgarria eskeini.

Andrew Slater instruktore kideak Micos-eko Toro urjauzi handiena jeitsi zuen nik argazkiak ateratzen nizkion bitartean, baina kayak aurrea gehiegi altxatu zitzaion eta zapal ureratu. Benetako erreskatea eta ospitalera. Bizkar orno konprimatua eta atsedenarekin indarberritua.

Ibaietatik kanpo turismo pixkat ere egin genuen. San Luis Potosin "Sotano de las Golondrinas"-era joan ginen, 500mtako sakonera eta goiko lurmailan 60mtako diametroa duen kono itxurako kobazuloa.

Egunsentian milaka sorbeltz (ez dira enarak) eta loro zehaztasun osoz espiralean hegan ateratzen dira kobatik. Ilunabarrean, berriz, kobaren gainean norantza berean biraka dabiltza, pikatuan kobazuloan behera taldeka botatzen diren bitartean eta gu haien ziztu hotsa entzunaz.

Ikusgarriak izan ziren biak, bai egunsentia baita ilunabarra ere.
VERACRUZ estatura abiatu ginen hemen urak lur altuetatik Karibera bide eder ugari higatu baititu.

Alseseca ibaia dugu hoberenetarikoa (eskuineko argazkian) Tlapacoyan herri inguruan. Harri ama, ura eta desnibela, ezin gehiago eskatu.

Barranca Grande ibaia jaitsi genuen 2 egunetan ibai bazterrean lo eginaz eta Pescadosen behera Jalcomulcon amaitu.

Argazki honetan ikusten da nola ikasleak dagoeneko ikasten ari ziren.

Sprit House genuen basea Jalcomulcoko herrian. Herri honetako etxe bakoitzak bere kolorea, usaina eta musika dauka. Zakur erasoen aurka makurtzearekin nahikoa da (harria hartu eta botako diezulakoan) eta gauean astoak kontu kontari dabiltza negarrak eta parre algarak eraginez.

'Reventon' ederra egin genuen nire urtebetetzean, Gerardo eta Miriamek antolatua, DJak, Yeti eta ni suzko kateekin dantzan,  etab.  Pura Banda!

Catemaco lakuko uharte batean tximino potoloak bisitatu ostean mendebalderuntz abiatu ginen, ozeano Bareko OAXACA estatu koloretsura. Huatulco-Mazunte inguruan egon ginen, 2002an lanean egon nintzen lekuan.

Copalita ibaiaren 3 sekzioak jaitsi genituen eta ibaiarekin itsasoratu hondartzako olatuak surfeatuaz. Gozagarria!

Honela bukatu zen WILD bidai programa. 3 hilabetetan denek ikasi genuen asko eta batzuei bizitzaren norabidea aldatuko zitzaien. Nire buruan txurro edo rasta generazio berria sortu nuen.

     Esperientzia gogoangarria dudarik gabe.

WILD bukatu eta hurrengo egunean Slater, Bernardo eta ni Zimatan ibaia jaistera joan ginen, grix-argi koloreko harri ama ederra ur mugimendu bereziekin. Bukaerako 'El Chorro' 8 metrotako urjauzi nahasi eta arriskutsuari nik bakarrik ematea erabaki genuen, baina gauza ez zen ondo atera. Ureratu orduko eskuin pareta azpijanaren aurka agertu nintzen iraulita, korronteak bultzatzen, ni alde guztietako eskimotaje mota guztiak eginez, baina kayaka ez zen mugitzen. Soka bota ninduten baina ez zuen balio, burua urazpian luzaro. Leku arriskutsu horretan igeri egiteko ordua iritsi zen. Gonatik tira eta  urjauzira bideratu nintzen, bi eskuekin ura hartu eta bola eginez sakontasun ilunera jaitsi. Segundu luze batzuren ondoren ibaian behean agertu nintzen arnas premiaz. Nire kayaka ordea urjauziaren atzeko kobazuloan agertu eta geratu zen. Ezin genuen ezer gehiago egin.

Hurrengo egunean material egokia, Bernardo eta ibai gida bihurtutako ikasle prestuenekin kayaka erreskatatzera itzuli ginen. Dena antolatuta ni nintzen arriskuan jarriko zen bakarra. Lotuta uretara jauzi egin eta urjauziaren zirrikitutik kobazuloan sartu nintzen, hor kayakik ez ordea, eta ura basati, eta pareta bustian dokumentaletako arrain ttiki eskalatzaileak. Bapatean kayaka misil moduan agertu zen azpitik, nik besarkatu eta 2. soka muturrarekin lotu nuen kobako ur mugimenduak birak eman arazten zizkigun bitartean, eta honekin sokak ni inguratzen... Seinale oihua bota orduko Bernardo eta ia 2mtako Bob indartsua nire sokari tiraka hasi ziren. Ur kortina gurutzatu nuen kayakaren sokatik askatzen saiatzen nintzen bitartean, baina txorkatiletan inguratua geratu zen. Zorionez kayaka nire atzetik etorri zen.

Dena salbu, eta penitentzia moduan kayak barruan ehundaka arrain eskalatzaile ttiki neuzkan. Kayaka tente jarri, tapoia ireki, ura kanpora baina arrainak plastikoan gora eskalatzen! Sinesgaitza. Arrainak kayakean usteldu eta haien kirats penitentziak egun askotan jarraitu ninduen.   2010ean itzuli eta El Chorro urjauzia ondo jaitsi nuen.

Wave Sport-eko T2 (Transformer) kayak hori honekin autobusetan Erdi Amerika gurutzatu eta Costa Ricaraino joan nintzen 2004ko abenduan.

The migration is something natural. In autumn when the night starts to be longer and colder, like the birds I want to go to the spring and change winter for summer.
Where in 2003? To the south hemisphere, to PATAGONIA.

Bariloche became my base camp in the northwest of Patagonia, surrounded by huge lakes and white Andean mountains.  I worked there on the Manso river like safety kayaker, but mostly on the high season between Christmas and February. Out of this high season it was the time to do some good expeditions.

1st ROUND TO PATAGONIA:  5.000 km in 15 days, 7 argentinians and one basque in one jeep. Departing from Bariloche to the south down the coast and come back through the Andean “Ruta 40”.
Although at the beginning I didn’t like the mate infusion, by the end of the trip I was addicted.

On my birthday we were in “Peninsula Valdes” when we jumped inside the 2 kayaks and 2 right whales came with curiosity. 18 meters mother quiet under me, all black around my kayak. 8 meters baby more active jumping, came closer and touched my kayak with its tail.

On the next round it came from the back moving slowly to my side with 5 cm of its back out of the water. Excited I loosed my right hand from the paddle and put it over the baby whale and I touched it from the head to the tail. In that moment I grabbed the paddle just in case…

With the breath not recovered yet, the mother whale submerged came from the back and passed me, lifted up its tail creating a wave and brought me… SURFING!   I remember the front of my kayak in the middle of this big tail.
It was orgasmic and each time I tell the story makes my skin hair stand on end.
Thank you Aldo&Co from Abraxas Rafting for the photos.

Have you ever seen a whale wave surfer?

Perito Moreno Glacier when it was still touching the front mountain damming the lake.
We saw an unexpected eclipse from there.

We hiked to Cerro Torre Lake with full moon in a not common night without clouds nor wind,
animated after a barbecue. We had this sunrise as a gift for not falling sleep.

In Fitz Roy wishing to fly like the Andean Condor of the t-shirt.

1st ROUND TO PATAGONIA: Ampler departing from Bariloche to Ushuaia (the most southern city in the world) in Tierra del Fuego, and coming back through Chile. Sua, Haritz and I departed in our “honda civic”, but at the chilean border in the ‘Estrecho de Magallanes’ Haritz realized he had his passport thousands kilometres away in Bariloche. “Have good adventures on your way Haritz!” and he had them.

The penguin that kissed me.

We arrived very late to the south-east corner of the continental land, took the sleeping bags and went to sleep at the beach. Doubting if we were dreaming we woke up surrounded by hundreds of penguins. Funny their runs.

After taking this photo to the penguin that was relaxed in its nest, I wanted to take another closer, and when I touched quietly the branch to put it apart,

ZAS!   Suddenly I stood up lifting my left arm (photo camera on my right hand) and I had a 70 cm penguin hanging from one finger, and didn’t want to loose me, and me shaking it. Finally it loosed me, felt on the belly and came back to its nest. I still have the mark of its kiss.

In Ushuaia used to live the “Yámana” when the europeans arrived, a nomad canoeist tribe. They were living naked putting seal fat on their skin. Each family used to move on one canoe with the tasks well divided. The father guiding with the paddle and hunting sea lions with the harpoon , the mother diving for seafood and the kids keeping the fire on. In a few years they almost extinguished. In 2005 there was only one Yámana alive.
I am also canoeist and nomad, and I’ll disappear too.

MOUNT ACONCAGUA (6.962 m)

Sua and I started hiking the normal route to the peak the 27th Feb 2004 without guide neither porters. It was cheaper at low season, but less probability to reach the highest point on earth out of Asia.

The Mount Aconcagua is the highest in America.

From Plaza de Mulas base camp we hiked up Cerro Bonete (5.000m) to acclimatize.

The 8th day we were at the last refuge at 6.000m, alone with another mountaineer.

After midnight I was melting the ice. After some previous hard times, that day I was feeling strong and acclimatized. The wind was strong too, too much.

The other mountaineer didn’t go out of his sleeping bag but I was decided with my death father’s photo inside the pocket.

Lifting my father’s honour up to the highest I was able to.

We left at dark with lamps and with white iced beard saw the most amazing sunrise I ever had. Long colourful lines on the exceptionally curved horizon cut by the huge triangular shadow of the Mount Aconcagua.

At around 6.300m high Sua’s hands and feet started freezing. The wind was rough and too dangerous.

Sua and me descending, proud for not having guide neither porters.

It was time to come down to the earth, time to value privileges like having a shower, shitting sitting, having dinner at the table in a restaurant and sleeping in a bed.

In December 2002 we went from Ushuaia (the most southern city on the world) to Puerto Natales through Chile. In Torres del Paine National Park we hiked 5 days around the big circuit and the “W”. Beautiful.

From there another 4-5 days in a big ferry ship to Puerto Montt through the chilean fjords, and after dancing in open sea with big waves, we participate in a big popular vomit.

Grey Glacier from the “Torres del Paine National Park” big circuit.

At the end of “Puente a Puente” classic section on the Rio Futaleufu.

  FUTALEUFU

In March 2003 I went alone to the World Class Futaleufú River. The car papers weren’t on my name so I had to left it at the border and I arrived hitchhiking to Futaleufú village with the police and the kayak.

I descended the 4 sections on my Perception “Method Air” kayak. “The Throne” V+ big rapid too, having to ferry above the Toaster surfing the huge Throne pillow (big rock in the middle of the river) to go back to the left better line. hehe, punchy punchy!

I worked in some trips of this mythic river. I remember a 91 years old grandfather we brought down on the raft, lonely traveller from USA in this not calm river.
At the end of the trip he went to the side and lift up his shorts on the right leg. I thought: "Is this man who invented this peeing technique?"
