PBR Pyrenees Buddies Race 2015 (eng)

The first edition of the PBR in 2010 was special for me. I arrived the night before to find no one at the race course and I slept in my old van. Next morning I had the softest and quietest wake up of my life as there was 40 cm of fresh snow over my van soundproofing it. "The road covered of snow.. ok, the first extreme kayak race of my life is not going to happen today" I thought. But when I was ready to go ski touring the snowplow showed up and behind Clarisse, one of the organizers. Few hours later the snow was melt and the event celebrated, where I took the second and third positions in sprint and slalom. This is when I met the other organizers Nicolas Fayol and Eric Deguil, and a lot of french kayakers.
     6 months later Eric and me had a very intense experience when he broke vertebrae ( Waterfalls TRUCHAS 18m + TOMATA 23m (MEX) ) but he recovered and became the winner of the Extreme Kayak World Cup 3 years in a row.

Merci Pierre Rigou for these photos.

     Now with more rust and more experience in our bodies we were going to celebrate the PBR 2015 from 1st to 3rd of May.

BOATER CROSS

     The first race was the Boater Cross on the Pau river. 6 kayakers beginning at the same time and racing a circuit, the first 2 go to the next round. We could see many flips and carnage as in the photo above, my semifinal.

     So we were on the boater cross final where you need to be fully on the game and I did the fastest start. I passed the gates and touched the plastic on the rock properly while feeling the machine Eric Deguil behind, but I was going to paddle as a warrior too in this first position.

     I had the victory on the Boater Cross race in front of Eric Deguil and Maxime Mitaut.

     On the second day was the Team Race and the individual Long Race on the Brousset river high on the Pyrenees. Starting on the entry of the canyon and finishing near the dam.

TEAM RACE

     I was on the team with Jonas Le Morvan and Maxime Le Morvan french slalom kayakers and brothers trying to paddle as fast as possible keeping the eye on each other. The team race generally was an spectacle specially on the last hard rapid. We offered some show also in our team but finished in second position after Max, David and Fafa.

LONG RACE

     After the team race was coming the individual Long Race. I was navigating smooth when half way of the race lost the hand from the paddle and flipped to be under water for 6 seconds. Going fast on the rapids is difficult and errors can be expensive.

     This photo is on the last hard rapid, the show rapid. I saw people going left, middle or right channel, upside down and backward too.

     I did a bad run and finished in 7th position. The machine Eric Deguil didn´t fail and won way ahead of everybody. My team mate Jonas 2nd and Fabien the young local 3rd.

     These days a beautiful sportive section on the Ossau river is running with water from Miegebat power plant to Eaux Chaudes because of the plant being broken, so a bunch of kayakers we went for an evening class 4+ continious navigation, pleasure!

    After dinner a classical PBR saturday night party went on down the valley in Laruns village in Pamplona bar.

SPRINT RACE

Some public on the first S turn rapid.

     The third and last day the river was high-very high. 0´90 at the scale was going to be a record race time. The first one starting was me so I had to focus and I meditate for 5 minutes before the start, I didn´t want to do more mistakes.

     Going hard and big on the core section entry boof.
     Thank you very much Maurice Pubert (Momo) for these awesome photos. Merci!

     I did not do any major mistake and I was fast. With all the excitement I went to my van, took the throw bag and closed the side door so fast that I trapped a finger. I started screaming but no one was on the parking..  5 minutes later the pain was relaxed.

    After all the competitors came down my time was the fastest and I win the Sprint Race, Max Mitaut 2nd and Jonas Le Morvan 3rd. Eric did my same error of the day before and he lost time, showing he is a human too!

     Doing a combination between the Long and Sprint races Eric Deguil the winner, Jonas Le Morvan second and Eneko the Basque 3rd.

     After 3 years not racing I came back to the game of paddling fast and I did it enjoying and winning the Boater Cross and the Sprint Races, second on the Team Race and 7th on the Long Race. I am a happy man with a sore finger.

     Thanks to the organizers and thank you very much for the discounts on these great kayaking material:

The double drop on the Zinketa (PIR, eng)

       @spanish

When we kayaked the pyrenean Zinketa river in summer 2012 we talked with Gorka Ferro, the local boy, and we search for information about the old impassable stretch of the classic section.

This is the sketch we did with him.

     The short canyon is usually porteaged and conceals two consecutive waterfalls. It´s so narrow that it has seen the deer jump from one wall to the other. Hence its name: "El Brinco de las Corcillas", =The Little Deer Jump.

     We wanted to run it for a while and this time we went to look at it closely.

     I could see the line but the consequences of not doing well were serious. The first jump sents you to the left against a large stone nose, the walls were undercut, behind the waterfall too, and the water was returning before the second jump. The most dangerous was this pool of 10m in length between the two waterfalls.

     The canyon was so narrow and deep that we could not do safety without more people or climbing gear, and we did not have them. We were keen but it was not advisable to jump without security so we withdrew it and kayaked the upper Zinketa and the red canyon sections.

     The day off the following week we returned to the Zinketa hidden valley, this time with better human and material resources. To warm up we paddled the upper Zinketa and had less water. We were not kayaking with good feelings, so Txomin decided not to jump. But Mino was with firm decision: "Today is the day, we will not have security and cameras another day!" That push was what I needed, then let´s go!

     Everything is almost ready. Security: hanging on the ropes Sergio in the center pool and Txomin at the end. Photography Clara Ocaña, Ima Badiola and Laura Cashmore. Fermin Perez "Mino" and Eneko Yarza changed with kayaks on the river. And more viewers up in the trees.

     That big stone nose is where the water wants to send you and avoiding it is the hardest thing of the entire canyon. Mino was send towards the nose but was not hurt, just hit the kayak..

     There I go getting into the penultimate stroke and Sergio attentive to the safety rope. This entry to jump is very technical and precise.

     Close to the right wall but with care because it bounces to the left and there is little depth to put the paddle in the water.
     Last stroke, there I wanted to be! I crossed the camber! And flight completely avoiding the nose. The lively audience screams as they feel calm the nerves of the disaster.
     I paddled straight to the second waterfall out of the dark shadow to sunshine. Here there is no further danger and is enjoyable.

     Glad the two, although Mino slightly less, in front of the shade&sun of the Little Deer Jump. Ay what a nice rush!

     Thanks to the whole team that supported us, eskerrikasko.

     This is a piece of plastic with which I am so happy, the ZET kayak. Lightweight, hard plastic, very comfortable inside and navigates very well. Even being number one selling kayaks in Germany, I am the only one carrying a ZET kayak in the spanish state. And why? not because people do not want it, but because there was no chance of buying a ZET kayak throughout Spain.

     But now they have arrived to the Pyrenees and whoever wants is able to buy any of the three models of the  ZET Kayaks: Veloc (smallest), Raptor (bigger), and the new Director model (the biggest).

    If someone is interested can contact Zet Kayak Spain. Some people are already very happy.

     Let's go kayaking!

Extreme Kayak Pyrenees Cup 2012

        @spanish

The Extreme Kayak Pyrenees Cup 2012 consists of 3 races to be held in spring:
   1.   May 18-19: PBR Pyrénées Buddies Race. Brousset river below Midi d'Ossau (France).                 http://www.pyreneesbuddiesrace.com/

            http://riverguru-extremerace.blogspot.com.es/

The final result of the Pyrenees Cup come out of the sum of points obtained in the different overall rankings of the 3 events.
You do not need to compete in the 3 races to go for the cup, although if not participating in one you will not score points in that.
There will be one Individual Cup and another one as a Team.
There will be ladies category if at least 4 kayakers participate and at least in 2 races.
To consider that one team is the same to add points for the Team Cup is a requirement that at least 2 members are the same in the different events.

Rating:
The overall individual winner on the first river (sprint +
extreme slalom) will take 12 points. The winning team will also get 12 points. If someone wins in all 3 events with 36 points would win the  Extreme Kayak Pyrenees Cup.

                                                Position 1 = 12   points
                                                Position 2 =   9   points

                                                            12 =  2    points
                                                            13 =  1´5 points
                                                            14 =  1    point
                                                            15 =  0´5 points

PYRENEES (eng)

 Mountain skiing with good mates

                Pyrenees is a range of mountains that extends from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean Sea. The highest peak rises to a height of 3404m (11,168 feet). Generally the best season for kayaking is when the snow is melting April-July, and the highest season for work is July-August. On the western part, in Euskal Herria, the mountains are smaller and rain is needed. Most kayaking rivers are in central Pyrenees, with the highest peaks. There are many low volume creek rivers, and still have to run more. Usually the roads are near the rivers, but going from valley to valley takes time, specially crossing the range.

Kayaking Adour de Lesponne river, and smiling.

                There are few river guidebooks that are like bibles for some: “White Water Pyrenees” from Patrick Santal, Gorka Ferro’s Aragonian rivers guidebook, etc.  You can check water levels in internet:

Raft guiding “El Puño” rapid on the Ara River

                Since 2000 I’ve been many seasons on the Pyrenees kayaking, river guide working, climbing, canyoning, mountaineering, skiing, partying, driving, dancing, drumming, juggling, biking and partying again.

Enjoying the scenery of Monte Perdido and other peaks.

                I river guided  on the Ara IV, Esera III+, Cinca and Gállego III(4). I based in Murillo de Gallego-Ayerbe area (Gallego river), Torla-Broto area (Ara river), Ainsa-Boltaña area (Ara&Cinca rivers), Campo (Esera river) and wherever I wanted in my old sky-blue Mercedes Benz 208 named “KUKI”, slow but tough warrior.
Kuki Banda. Welcome to my nomad house.
